Is GeorginaConnects the same thing as South Shore Community Broadband?
GeorginaConnects is the new brand name for the Internet service brought to you by South Shore Community Broadband.
What is South Shore Community Broadband?
South Shore Community Broadband (SSCB) is a legally incorporated, not-for-profit organization that brings several local public and private organizations together in partnership. The purpose of this partnership is to build, operate, and maintain an advanced telecommunications infrastructure that provides affordable, superior quality broadband Internet access to Georgina and, in particular, to the unserviced and underserviced areas of our town. Since its inception in 2003, the SSCB partnership has been working towards this goal. Over the years, with the generous support of our Municipal Government and through a series of grants from funding programs at various government levels, we have created an infrastructure that has over $1.5M in assets and provides an excellent, true value service to many Georgina residents and businesses. While our coverage area is not yet large enough to reach every part of our Town, we do provide service to the vast majority of areas that previously had no access to high speed or broadband Internet services whatsoever.
What kind of service is it?
The service is wireless. It uses radio frequencies to send the Internet signal to the various towers we have strategically located over a large geographical area, and then to spread the signal to the customers in the surrounding area.
How does it work?
First, there needs to be a receiver (called a subscriber unit) at your location. Then, the receiver is attached by cable to your computer or your network router.
The type of subscriber unit you will need depends on the type of service available in your area. In some areas, particularly rural and heavily treed places, you will likely need to have an outdoor subscriber unit mounted on a tall location at your property. In other areas, you will only need some type of indoor receiver.
Can I install the equipment myself?
Subscriber unit installations can be difficult, particularly in the case of the outdoor equipment, and calibration and testing of the unit must be carefully and precisely done. Therefore, all of our installations must be done by our experienced team of professionals. This ensures that, when the installation is complete, you have a connection that is optimized for maximum signal strength and reliability. It also allows us to keep a record of your installation and make any special notes on your file so that we can serve you better in the future should issues or problems with your connection arise.
How fast is the service?
Standard service packages range from 3 mbps download/upload up to 15 mbps download/upload, depending on the type of service available in your area. How much does it cost per month?
The monthly price for standard service packages ranges from $38.95 to $64.95, depending on the type of service you are getting and whether it is used for residential or business purposes.
In cases where an outdoor subscriber unit is required, there will be an additional charge of $6.99 per month for the equipment rental. (The cost for customers to purchase the equipment outright is prohibitive and therefore we purchase them and rent them out for a monthly fee to keep the up-front start up costs as low as possible.)
In cases where an indoor subscriber unit is used, there is no additional equipment rental charge since this equipment is inexpensive, and commercially available for customers to purchase themselves.
How does it cost to get started?
The basic installation cost is $125 plus network cables and brackets. In cases where only an indoor, the customer must also purchase the subscriber unit which typically ranges from $50 to $120.
How do I find out if service is available in my area?
While we do have a basic map on this web site, the best way to find out if you can get GeorginaConnects is to call our service reseller, Internet Lake Simcoe (ILS) at 905-476-1011. If they can’t tell you right away, they can schedule a technician to do a site survey to determine whether or not GeorginaConnects is available at your location and, if so, what type of service is available.
Do I need to be home for the site survey?
No. Our technician does not need to access your home to do the site survey. Typically, we just need to see the property to determine if there is sufficient line of sight to the nearest tower, which can be done from the roadside or driveway.
Do I need to sign a contract?
This is one of the great things about GeorginaConnects. There’s no contract to sign, and no penalty to pay. While we’re sure you’re going to be completely satisfied with the service, you can cancel at any time without cost.
Are there any other “hidden” start up or monthly fees?
No, other than the monthly fee, monthly equipment rental (if applicable), installation cost, and equipment purchase (if applicable) mentioned in the above questions, there are no additional costs such as “system activation fee” or “data usage overage fee”.
